Horticulture

In the ten year period to 2003 there was a doubling of the area under horticultural production from 10 000 ha to 20 000 ha – an annual growth rate of 10%. This area has now increased to over 25 000 ha with the expectation that over the next four years, with rapid growth occurring in the almond and olive industries, the area will almost double again to 50 000 ha.

While expansion is still continuing throughout the region from both local growers and outside investors, land within immediate access to the Murray River or other irrigation infrastructure could yet be developed. The Swan Hill region is therefore anticipated to become one of the major irrigation areas in Australia over the next two decades.
